William Galston on 2024 and Trump’s Conviction

At the end of the 1990s, we had more than 18 million manufacturing jobs. Ten years later, we had a little bit more than 12 million manufacturing jobs. How did we think the people who experienced those losses, and more to the point, the communities that experienced those losses, how did we think they were gonna feel? I have to say, looking back at the decade when that happened, it is remarkable how little discussion there was of this historic change in the American economy, which happened by historical standards in the twinkling of an eye. Did we think that the people who lost those jobs were simply going to take their losses and go work at Walmart for half the previous salaries? We should have known better.
